The first annual Beaver Brook Summer 5K was almost a washout. The rainiest
July in dozens of years in southern New Hampshire had thoroughly soaked the
course and just a few hours before race time, torrential downpours added to
the already swollen Beaver Brook which runs down the middle of the course.
Somehow though, the skies cleared in the 2 hours prior to the race and runners
were treated to a beautiful day on the still soggy course. Temperatures remained
moderate, keeping the runners from overheating, especially while trudging up
the almost half mile climb from Beaver Brook back up to the race finish.
Rumors were flying in the minutes leading up to race start about the giant
man-eating beavers that live in the swamp at the center of the Beaver Brook
Association, but in the end all the runners made it back to the finish safe
and sound. (Though by the look of one young lady's hair, she might have had
a close encounter with Beaverzilla during the race. If anyone has a photo of
this young lady, please send it in so we can post it here...)
Despite the close encounter and one runner turning around after a quarter mile
with a sprained ankle, the race went on and Michael Fraysse and Natalie Harvey
romped to victory. Fraysse pulled away on the return trip for a 23 second win
over Saied Zargar, while Harvey had to work a little harder to eke out a 10
second victory over Bonnie Cruz. Notable among the field was 9 year old Jackie
Hallerman averaging 10 minutes per mile over the hilly and challenging circuit.
Overall winners and age group champions went home with Beaver Brook 5k Pint
Glasses (or Soda Mugs for the under 21 crowd. Most of the field stayed around
for the huge post race raffle featuring 2 pairs of Vasque Trail Running Shoes,
FuelBelts, RoadIDs, Falcom Safety Horns, and Fun On Foot In New England Books.
3CRP will return to Beaver Brook on December 14 for the Winter version of this race,
a 4.5K ("Feels Like 5K") romp through the woods. We are also looking at February
dates for a snowshoe race over the same course.
